Home Education

Parents do not have to send their children to school; however, they do have to ensure their child is educated and this can be a home-based education. Education is compulsory, schooling is not. Parents may have philosophical or religious reasons for making this choice; their children may be school phobic or have special educational needs.

The Local Authority (LA) will need to be satisfied that the child is receiving a suitable education which should prepare a child for life in a modern society and allow the child to reach his or her full potential.

An Home Education Officer from the Local Authority (LA) will request to visit the family once a year to view the education being offered. Following this visit, a report will be written stating whether the provision is suitable.

There is no entitlement to financial help from the LA.

Children with special educational needs, whether they have a Statement or not, can also be home educated either because the LA agrees that this is appropriate, or because the parents can show they are able to meet the child’s special educational needs. The LA must be consulted and give permission for children with Statements of Special Educational Needs to be home educated and they will continue to review the Statement once a year.
