Home Education

Parents do not have to send their children to school; however, they do have to ensure their child is educated and this can be a home-based education. Parents may have philosophical or religious reasons for making this choice; their children may be school phobic or have special educational needs.

The Local Authority (LA) will need to be satisfied that the child is receiving a suitable education and parents need to provide information such as their educational aims, teaching methods, samples of children’s work and work plans. There is no entitlement to financial help from the LA.

Children with special educational needs, whether they have a Statement or not, can also be home educated either because the LA agrees that this is appropriate, or because the parents can show they are able to meet the child’s special educational needs.
