What is Child Benefit?
Child Benefit is a tax free benefit paid to people who are bringing up children. Child Benefit is a universal benefit and is not means tested; it doesn't matter how much money you earn or how much savings you have to access the benefit.
From 5th January 2009 the rate of Child Benefit is:
- £20.30 for your first eligible child;
- £13.40 for each subsequent child.
When do you claim Child Benefit?
You should make a claim as soon as possible after your baby has been born, whether or not you have the birth certificate, or when a child comes and lives with you. It is best to claim Child Benefit before the baby is one month old otherwise you may lose some benefit. Child Benefit can only be backdated for up to 3 months.

You can ring the Child Benefit Helpline on 0845 302 1444 (Monday - Sunday 8:00am - 8:00pm) for an application form. This can be a good thing to do before your baby is born.
You may be given the form by your midwife, Health Visitor or when you register the birth.

Child Benefit is paid every 4 weeks into a bank, building society, Post Office or National Savings account.

You are entitled to Child Benefit if you are bringing up children who are:

under 16 years of age;

under 19 years of age and studying full time for AS level, A level, level 2 or level 3 qualification;

aged 16 or 17, have left school and are actively seeking work or training with the Careers or Connexions Service.
