This means that the individual or setting caring for children is registered with and inspected by Ofsted.
The registration process is robust, including CRB checks, and Ofsted inspectors make non-scheduled or short notice visits to monitor the care and education provided. Parents are encouraged to ask to see a copy of their latest inspection reports which are also available at www.ofsted.gov.uk or from the Family Information Service on 08457 585072.
Any individual or group that cares for under 8s (even if the majority of children are over 8) for reward – money or gift – must be registered with Ofsted.
In September 2008 Ofsted introduced new registers for childcare providers.
Early Years Register (EYR)
For any individual or group caring for children from birth until 31st August after their 5th birthday. All providers on the Early Years Register must follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) standards and welfare guidance.
Compulsory Childcare Register (CCR)
For any individual or group caring for children from 1st September following their 5th birthday up to the age of 8.
In reality this means that most childminders and groups offering both pre-school and after-school provision are on both the Early Years and Childcare Registers.
Voluntary Childcare Register (VCR)
for any individual or group for whom registration is not compulsory (as above).
This includes:
-
home childcarers such as nannies caring for children in the child's own home;
-
any individual or group only caring for children over the age of 8 years;
-
activity based provision such as sports clubs, uniformed groups.
Parents may be able to claim part of the costs for any provider registered on the Early Years Register, Childcare Register or Voluntary Childcare Register.
